Wow, that’s pretty hardcore. I wonder if that was Alladin’s decision or Apple’s. I can see a lot of new users left adrift by its absence.
If you deployed an Archive or Update Install of Tiger, StuffIt remained available, but became useless until you re-installed it and/or updated it to the newest version…
What puzzles me more though – since before Tiger, is that Apple provided us with a nice contextual “Create Archive of…”, but failed to include an equally nice “Unzip this Archive” (or similar). Or am I missing something obvious ?
BomArchiveHelper will open .zip, .tar, .bz2, and .tgz files. In Panther, it would only open .zip files.
BomArchiveHelper is associated with the above file types. Just double click them to open.
You can install stuffit no problem by going to aladdin’s site and grabbing a (free) copy of unstuffit. Frankly, I don’t want apple or 3rd party vendors to embrace anything other than dmg. You can add compression so zipping it or stuffing it or bzipping it is not necessary if you create the dmg file correctly.
Sean has the right idea when it comes to Mac-specific software. There’s no reason for stuff to be anything other than dmg unless it needs to be accessible to other operating systems.
Having said that, though, .tar.bz2 is the best general solution.
Although as mneptok said, there’s a huge body of software out there that’s already distributed as .sit archives, and it’s going to take a very long time to change that.
On the other hand, with all of the open source archiving options out there, it doesn’t make sense to lean so heavily on a product by a single “chosen” company (Alladin). Removing StuffIt from the OS is probably the best way to encourage the world away from it.
To pick a nit, Aladdin is spelled Aladdin.
But, Aladdin Systems changed their name to Allume. So no need to remember my correction.

All you have to do is double-click it and it opens (or choose “Open” if you wish to use a contextual menu).
DO you provide Safari and only Safari ? or do you also provide Firefox/Camino ?
Ludovic, we provide both, but only Safari is in the Dock (i.e. it’s the primary browser).
